Anxiety Disorders

A Brief Introduction To Anxiety

A certain level of anxiety is natural and, in many ways, it is also healthy. Most of us have experienced the nerve tingling emotions associated with a first day at work, or even a first date. These are feelings of anxiety and in the appropriate dose it can help you to cope with virtually any situation. However, anxiety disorders occur when you face too much anxiety or struggle to cope with the anxiety you experience.

Different Types Of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety DisordersAnxiety disorders tend to manifest themselves in different ways. Some sufferers experience feelings of anxiety on a near permanent basis even though there is no reason to do so. Other sufferers complain that while they suffer anxiety attacks at times when they would be expected in anyone, the anxiety they feel is magnified to a much greater degree that is almost impossible to cope with. A combination of the two is also possible with sudden and inexplicable attacks of anxiety causing the rest of your life to take a back seat.

Anxiety Disorders Are A Bigger Problem Than You Might Think

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common of all disorders, and the most common mental health disorder and can range from social phobia to agoraphobia. Anxiety disorders can prove particularly difficult to diagnose in patients that suffer increased anxiety. Many patients, in these cases, will find it extremely difficult to even visit their physician let alone talk through the problem with them.

Sufferers Can't Simply Pull Themselves Together

One of the most common misconceptions regarding anxiety disorders is the belief that they are caused by a person being weak. The usual response is to tell people to pull themselves together. This simply isn't true - anxiety disorders such as panic attacks cannot be blamed on a simple character flaw or a person being emotionally weak. This response is more damaging than it is helpful but is caused by ignorance to anxiety disorders rather than anything else. Education is the key to beating anxiety disorders.
